New on HBO Now: All the Movies and TV Coming in February

Can you believe 2018 is almost over already? It isn’t, but it sort of feels that way—the new year is flying by and has already brought about a dizzying amount of new movies and TV shows to get excited about. HBO’s streaming platform HBO Now is adding a number of particularly noteworthy movies and TV shows next month, so here’s what you need to see.

The biggest feature film fish swimming into HBO’s pond in February is undoubtedly Wonder Woman, the Gal Gadot-starring superhero sensation that single-handedly righted the DC Extended Universe (only for Justice League to throw it right back out of whack again), ultimately landing on Paste’s list of 2017’s best movies (though it was shut out of this morning’s Oscar nominations). So those precious few of you who didn’t see the blockbusting Wonder Woman in theaters—or who are overdue for a rewatch, as it’s been over six months since the film’s release—are in luck. For what it’s worth, Gadot’s Diana Prince also appears in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which leaves HBO Now at the end of next month. Other films on their way to HBO in February include Steven Spielberg’s 1982 family classic E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Edgar Wright’s stylish graphic novel adaptation Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, 10-time Oscar-winning 1961 musical West Side Story and a heaping helping of films from the Alien franchise, including Alien (Director’s Cut) (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (Extended Version) (1992) and Alien Resurrection (Extended Version) (1997), as well as Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990) and AVP: Alien vs. Predator (Extended Version) (2004). And in honor of Black History Month, five finalists from HBO’s Short Film Competition at the American Black Film Festival will join the streaming service, joining already-streaming films like the Oscar-nominated Loving.

Moving now to the small screen, HBO is adding a momentous new title for fans of True Blood and Six Feet Under: Here and Now, the latest series from creator Alan Ball, makes its debut on Feb. 11. Here and Now stars a pair of Oscar winners in Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter—HBO describes the show as “a provocative and darkly comic meditation on the disparate forces polarizing present-day American culture, as experienced by the members of a progressive multi-ethnic family—a philosophy professor and his wife, their adopted children from Vietnam, Liberia and Colombia and their sole biological child—and a contemporary Muslim family, headed by a psychiatrist who is treating one of their children.” Also exciting on HBO’s television slate is the much-needed return of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver—the half-hour satirical news show is all that stands between us and utter insanity in Donald Trump’s America, and it returns for its fifth season on Feb. 19, thank goodness. Also on their way next month are 2 Dope Queens: Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson, co-hosts of the hit podcast of the same name, who are bringing four hourlong specials to HBO on Feb. 2. We recently highlighted Williams and Robinson among our picks for the most innovative comedians working today, with Paste’s Seth Simons lauding the duo as “effortlessly funny comedians and equally adept hosts, as remarkable telling one-liners as they are spinning longer stories or answering listener questions.”

Lastly, be advised that a couple of key titles are leaving HBO Now next month. Those include the visceral and sweeping World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, Hellboy II: The Golden Army from The Shape of Water’s visionary director Guillermo del Toro, the aforementioned Loving, both Sister Act and Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, and M. Night Shyamalan’s 2000 drama Unbreakable, which we ranked among the director’s best films last year.
