Pose Renewed for Second Season by FX

Yes, honey: Pose, the revolutionary musical drama from co-creators Ryan Murphy and Steven Canals, has been renewed for a second season by FX.

The ‘80s-set dance drama takes place at an intersection of New York society, caught between the Paris Is Burning era of ball culture, the rise of Trump’s luxury America, and the downtown social and literary scene, exploring themes surrounding the HIV/AIDS crisis and class struggle.

Critically, Pose has been celebrated for having the largest-ever cast of transgender actors portraying series-regular transgender characters, as well as for being the first primetime drama to be directed by a black trans woman, with Janet Mock at its helm. The series stars Dominique Jackson, MJ Rodriguez, Indya Moore, Angelica Ross and Hailie Sahar, among others.

Fox CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman praised the series for being both “universal in its themes of love and family as it is specific and important and one-of-a-kind,” and it’s true. As Paste TV Editor Matt Brennan writes in his take on why we need Pose this summer, the series is “so remarkably unlike anything else currently on TV that it comes to resemble a protest, a sign-waving, slogan-chanting, queer-as-a-two-dollar-bill Pride March through American living rooms.”

Murphy recently left 20th Century Fox TV to sign a $300 million deal with Netflix, but the producer/director/writer will continue his involvement with Pose as an executive producer.

Pose heads into the penultimate episode of its first season this Sunday. Check back for further updates on season two before the show returns in 2019.
