New Trailer for The Crown Season Three Shows the Cast and Times Have Changed

Netflix released the first official trailer for The Crown Monday, the series that takes a closer look at the long and still ongoing reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The trailer shows a darker Britain and graver stakes for an expanded royal family, as Olivia Colman, fresh off an Oscar win for playing another monarch in The Favourite, takes over the role of Queen Elizabeth from Emmy winner Claire Foy.

The trailer shows a reflective Elizabeth 25 years into her reign and struggling to maintain relevance in a rapidly metamorphosing Britain that has no time to look back. Security and financial problems trouble the nation, while tests of familial loyalty plague personal relationships behind palace gates. Helena Bonham Carter is a far cry from her days as the deranged Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter, but even as the polished Princess Margaret, younger sister to the Queen, she’s still far from the throne. The trailer also features a young and uncertain Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) looking for recognition from his family. “Times change. Duty endures,” reads the tagline for this season, and it’s clear that the hallmark of the show—renowned acting—will also endure with this next installment.

The Crown is written by Peter Morgan, and stars Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Tobias Menzies as The Duke of Edinburgh, O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten. The directorial slate for this season has not been released yet—we’ve reached out to Netflix and will update this post with that information when we can.
