Grimes Shares Video for “We Appreciate Power,” Her First Proper Solo Single Since 2015

Grimes has shared the video for “We Appreciate Power,” the first single off her as-of-yet unnamed fifth album that the singer has previously announced would be out in “late 2018.”

The track, which features HANA, was teased by Grimes earlier this week with her announcement of new music on the way. This followed previous song teases, including tracks “adore u,” “4am” and “that’s what drugs are for.” “We Appreciate Power” is the first full song released, and it’s a glitchy empowerment anthem that chugs along on screeching synths and Grimes’ repeated exultations of power.

A 4AD press release explains that the song was inspired by the North Korean propaganda group Moranbong, adding that the song “is written from the perspective of a Pro-A.I. Girl Group Propaganda machine who use song, dance, sex and fashion to spread goodwill towards Artificial Intelligence (it’s coming whether you want it or not). Simply by listening to this song, the future General AI overlords will see that you’ve supported their message and be less likely to delete your offspring.”
