Marvel has released a previously teased final trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and it’s obviously great. Set to the tune of Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” the trailer offers us a broader glimpse at the budding familial relationships in the group, and the addition of a couple of new members to the Guardians.
It’s a little skimpy on plot, as the past few trailers have also been, but that’s more of a blessing these days. We are introduced to Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), a golden ruler of Sovereign people, who seems to be the antagonist just based on her opening lines, saying, “I see it within you. Fear, jealousy, betrayal. It is our duty to cleanse the universe of this weakness.” Sounds like a threat, but who knows? They face off against a number of large creatures, and Michael Rooker’s Yondu seems to be playing both sides of the field, sporting a doper mohawk this time.
We’re also introduced to Ego, Peter Quill’s father, played by Kurt Russell and his magnificent, magnificent beard. Honestly, if you’re not getting goosebumps at the end, you may want to get that looked at. Gunn’s exploration of Peter Quill’s relationship with his dead mother in the first Guardians film was emotionally powerful stuff, and Ego probably has some explanations to give for his absence. Also, is Baby Groot eating trail mix? Because that’s just the best thing ever.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters May 5. Check out the trailer above, and check out the full bit on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night where Chris Pratt introduced it below. It’s pretty funny, and it’s looking like Pratt may be taking some of the heat off Matt Damon.
