John Oliver Takes a Moment to Apologize for His Part in Trump’s Candidacy
Images via HBO/YouTubeJohn Oliver is sorry, and he has a good reason to be. Turns out, when the Last Week Tonight host was a guest host on The Daily Show several years ago, he responded very favorably to the idea of a Trump candidacy. “In my defense, I have no defense for that and was hoping to think of one before finishing this sentence, and oh, sh— it’s over,” Oliver said after playing the old clip.
The host went on to say that he hopes America rejects Trump, but that we should be cautious. “We are at a point where this man has a genuine shot at the presidency despite having blown up a political party, undermined confidence in our electoral system, declared open season on journalists, and unleashed a river of racism and misogyny,” Oliver said. “Also, and I feel like we’ve lost sight of this: he has really stupid hair. It’s important to remember that.”
Oliver then played even older footage of himself as a correspondent on The Daily Show promising that the Cubs would never win a World Series. “I’m an idiot,” Oliver said. “But that clearly shows no outcome is certain, so if you are thinking you don’t have to show up to vote on Tuesday because there is no way the impossible could happen, take it from somebody who has learned from painful experience: you are wrong about that.”
