Rick and Morty Did It, Again: McDonald’s Is Bringing Back Szechuan Sauce

If you’ve been on the internet over the past 24 hours, surely you’ve witnessed the uproar over McDonald’s’ Szechuan sauce, the tangy condiment brought back from the dead by Rick and Morty and its hordes of zealous-to-a-fault fans. The fast-food chain brought the highly sought-after sauce back for a single day on Saturday, Oct. 7, and the results were … not great.

Between an extremely low sauce supply and an extremely high sauce demand, the promotion resulted in little more than legions of angry Rick and Morty fans, and as a mea culpa—albeit one they stand to profit from immensely—McDonald’s is now giving said fans exactly what they want: more of that Mulan McNuggets sauce. Much more.

“Szechuan Sauce is coming back once again this winter,” McDonald’s announced. “And instead of being one-day-only and limited to select restaurants, we’re bringing more—a lot more—so that any fan who’s willing to do whatever it takes for Szechuan sauce will only have to ask for it at a nearby McDonald’s.” The fast-food chain promises more details to come.

Considering Rick and Morty recently became the top comedy on television in its acclaimed third season, it’s hardly a surprise that McDonald’s is opting to appease the show’s condiment-craving, catchphrase-quoting audience. Only time will tell if more widespread availability dulls the Szechuan sauce buzz.
