Steve Martin and Martin Short, the two amigos who don’t seem to be hated by everybody they’ve ever worked with, share more than just a name. They have a common comic sensibility, one that lovingly sends up old show business stereotypes and mid-century expectations of what a comedian is supposed to do. In a word, they’re both “goofy”—or, as Netflix, in its increasing dependence on adjectives, has decided, they’re “irreverent, feel-good, witty.”
It makes sense that they’ve been doing a stage tour together over the last year. They’re two of the last comedians your parents can name, and they took their old friendship to the road, performing a series of variety-style shows where they shared memories and looked back on the past in a way that is probably both tongue-in-cheek and sweetly sincere. It also makes sense that Netflix signed up the TV rights, as Martin and Short tick off every box on Netflix’s wish list for comedy specials: they are comedians, and they have a special.
