GameStop Tests Out Selling Comic Books to Boost Revenue
Photo by Ethan Miller/GettyGameStop is looking to compete with online retailers by adding comic books to their pop culture fan-friendly fare, according to a statement from the company. The initiative is a test program that will begin in 40 stores, with the possibility of future expansion. Though GameStop has sold action figures and other comic franchise memorabilia for many years, this is their first attempt at peddling the actual books.
According to the company’s statement: “Comics are often a part of our promotional entertainment industry environment, including videogames—we can learn from this tribal knowledge. The comics are mostly from Marvel and DC with a focus on key series and titles.” The company’s collectibles business grew by 24 percent during the first quarter, while its overall sales declined by 5.5 percent.
Time will tell if this move proves successful, but it’s certainly not an ill-informed maneuver. The overlap of videogame and comics fans is vast, and many still prefer to buy their comics in-store. Plus, in the age of the ever-expanding DC and Marvel cinematic universes, spin-off games and comics are on the rise. If this pays off, GameStop could become a one-stop shop for all your fan needs.
