Marvel’s Sana Amanat Will Speak at The United States of Women Summit Today

Comics News

Today, the White House is hosting the United States of Women Summit which aims to gather influential women to discuss topics of equality and “celebrate what has been achieved, and to discuss candidly about what action is needed moving forward.”

Among the many celebrities, scholars and other professionals present, Marvel Comics Director of Content and Character Development Sana Amanat will speak during the “‘REEL’ Change: Advancing Equity and Opportunity in Media” panel. According to a press release, the panel will be “devoted to furthering women’s roles in corporations, academia, the media and the public sector.”

In 2014, Amanat co-created Kamala Khan, a.k.a. the new Ms. Marvel, the first Muslim superhero to get their own headlining comic.

“It’s an unbelievable honor to be invited to participate in one of the most influential summits devoted to gender equality,” said Amanat in a statement. “I am thrilled to represent Marvel in a conversation devoted to the media’s role in a more inclusive future.”

This isn’t Amanat’s first trip to D.C. Earlier this year, she delivered the opening remarks at a Women’s History Month reception and presented the president with his own copy of Ms. Marvel No. 1.

“Ms. Marvel may be your comic book creation, but I think for a lot of young boys and girls, Sana’s a real superhero,” Obama said during his speech, per the LA Times.

The United States of Women Summit is currently ongoing and available for streaming here. The panel featuring Amanat is set to start today at 2:50 p.m. EST. In the meantime, revisit our feature on the 10 best comics for adolescent girls, which features Ms. Marvel.
