Let’s do Brunch: Six Morning Cocktails for Mother’s Day

We love moms. And there’s no better way to celebrate the importance of your mother than by getting a little tipsy before noon. Mother’s Day is all about brunch and brunch is all about cocktails. Chances are, you’ve been knocking back Bloody Mary’s and Mimosas all of your adult life. There’s nothing wrong with that, but a well made Bloody Mary or refreshing Mimosa is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a whole big world of brunch cocktails out there. Do your mom proud by expanding your horizons with these morning booze options. In the words of W.C. Fields, “Meet me down at the bar. We’ll drink breakfast together.”

3 ounces of tequila
6 ounces of grapefruit soda (like Izzy)
.5 ounces of lime juice
Salt for rim

Tequlia for breakfast? Absolutely. The Paloma is light, fizzy, refreshing—think of it as the Mexican Pimm’s Original. Directions: Mix tequila, lime juice in a tall glass with a salted rim, then top off with grapefruit soda and stir. Garnish with a wedge of lime.

2. Pimm’s Original

1 part Pimm’s No. 1
3 parts lemonade
Mint, cucumber slice, orange slice

Refreshing, fruity and not to heavy on the booze, the Pimm’s Original is a great option for a brunch punch. Directions: Get a big pitcher and mix all the ingredients with ice.

3. Red Snapper

6 ounces of tomato juice
3 ounces of gin
.5 ounces of lemon juice
.5 ounces of lime juice
5 dashes of worsteshire
3 dashes of hot sauce
Pepper
Celery salt for rim

Okay, this looks like a Bloody Mary, and essentially it is, except gin is standing in for vodka, adding a whole other level to an already complex drink. Directions: Add all ingredients in a shaker, mix and strain into a glass over ice, rimmed with celery salt. Garnish liberally.

4. Bacon Infused Bourbon

1/3 cup of cooked bacon fat
3 cups of bourbon

Yes, this is a breakfast drink. See the bacon? It’s right there in the title. Directions: After cooking a mess of bacon, take some of the fat (1/3 cup) and put it in a mason jar. Then add the bourbon of your choice. Screw the lid on the jar and let it cool to room temperature. Put it in your freezer for 24 hours, then pour the bourbon into another jar through a coffee filter. Serve on the rocks.

5. Orange Stillman

6 ounces of champagne
6 ounces of orange juice

From the Brunch masterminds at The Rosebud in Atlanta, the Orange Stillman is like a Mimosa did it with a Screwdriver. Directions: Combine all ingredients in a massive mason jar, stir and add ice. Drink responsibly.

1 bottle of Prosecco
Lime and orange slices for garnish

This is your crowd-favorite champagne punch option. Directions: Add ingredients in a punch bowl, stir, and float slices of lime and orange in the bowl. Ladle into glasses with ice. You can also add a bit of white rum if you want to add a bit of a kick.
