Drink Booze, Save a School

Later this week, a number of bars, wineries, breweries and restaurants in the San Francisco area will band together for a unique cause: an elementary school.

The sixth annual Taste of Potrero takes place this Thursday, an event that pairs some of the city’s best restaurants with its best beverage makers, all to benefit Daniel Webster Elementary, an underserved public elementary school in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. Held in San Francisco’s Pier 70, the event works somewhat like your typical beer festival, with individual booths for each brewery, bar, and restaurant. Bars will be whipping up some speciality cocktails for the event, and restaurants will have delectable bites from their menus, as well as a few event-specific surprises.

Buying a ticket scores you all you can eat and drink during the four-hour event (7pm-11pm).

Over the past five years, the event has raised over $500,000 for the elementary school, with funds going to help increase teacher’s salaries (which are notably low given the cost of living in the Bay Area), as well as tutoring for children, professional development for teachers, and an award-winning character and physical skills program called Playworks. For a school that was literally on the brink of closing a few years ago, the event has been the saving grace, allowing the school to not only keep its doors open, but also provide a better education and experience for the students who attend it.

“It has been truly inspiring to witness such enthusiastic support from San Francisco foodies for the benefit of local public education,” said former San Francisco Mayor and Potrero Hill resident, Art Agnos. “Taste of Potrero’s growing success truly exemplifies the impact that a community can have when it comes together.”

This year’s event will include libations from Harmonic, Triple Voodoo, Almanac Brewing, layer Cake, Canella, Homestead, Brass Tacks, Sea Star, Third Rail, Trick Dog, Waits Mast, Comstock, and Beretta.
