Paramount Announces A Quiet Place Sequel

At CinemaCon on Wednesday, Paramount studio chief Jim Gianopulos announced they would be going ahead with a sequel to the surprise hit A Quiet Place and at least two more Star Trek films, according to THR. The horror film from director John Krasinski has earned an impressive $213 million at the global box office. The film only cost $17 million to make, proving it to be quite a profitable film for Paramount, which was a much-needed success after a less-than-stellar year to date, with flops like Downsizing, Suburbicon, Same Kind of Difference as Me and most recently, Annihilation.

A Quiet Place was the first film to go into production under the leadership of CEO Gianopulos, who formerly ran Fox. So far, recruiting Gianopulos seems to have been an overall good move for Paramount.

“If you told me five years ago that an almost silent film starring the very funny guy Jim from The Office would have been a hit at Paramount, I would have said, ‘Well, I should go work at Paramount,’” Gianopulos told the crowd at CinemaCon.

Krasinski and co-scriptwriters Bryan Woods and Scott Beck declared there is plenty of material left over to do a sequel; however, Krasinski has already signed on to direct the forthcoming Life on Mars for Paramount. Most likely, A Quiet Place 2 (A Quieter Place?) will come after that.

Gianopulos also announced the studio’s plans for at least two more Star Trek films. He said Quentin Tarantino is developing one with J.J. Abrams. No new details were revealed about that project, but the film will most likely be the first in the Star Trek universe to have an R rating. We are talking Tarantino, after all.

While at the panel, Abrams was able to give a tease of his new horror film Overlord with Paramount. It follows a group of soldiers behind enemy lines during World War II, where they encounter some strange situations including a decapitated head that talks. He described the film as “batshit” and assured listeners it “is not a Cloverfield movie.”

Although, Abrams also announced that a “true, creative Cloverfield sequel” is in development. There’s no news on the potential release dates for any of these forthcoming projects except Overlord, which will open on Oct. 26.
