Julia Louis-Dreyfus Leads A24 Dramedy You Hurt My Feelings in First Trailer

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter if a film premise feels immediately familiar–what matters is if that premise is being handled by a talented craftsman, and brought to life by performers who can give the material vibrancy. A24’s upcoming dramedy You Hurt My Feelings certainly falls into a familiar-sounding camp, part of a wave of films about older Americans reassessing their lives, their marriages and their satisfaction, but the next film from director Nicole Holofcener also looks to contain a warmth and spark, provided by stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tobias Menzies, Michaela Watkins and Arian Moayed. Together, the quartet play four corners of a group that are each struggling in their own ways. Or as the official synopsis puts it:

Beth, an author, struggles with a lack of self-confidence and her marriage with unsuccessful therapist Don is affected by a white lie about her latest book. Before this, they had a peaceful but co-dependent relationship, which makes their only child uncomfortable. Beth’s sister helps her cope with the pain, possibly because of her own struggles with husband Mark, who is a struggling actor.

Louis-Dreyfus is Beth, a woman grappling with feelings of failure after her writing career takes a downturn. Bolstered by her husband’s reassurances, she comes to realize that he’s simply been telling her what she wants to hear, throwing their longtime steady marriage into flux. It’s a relatively simple story about putting the pieces back together, one that attracted generally positive reviews at its Sundance premiere, including our own. In addition to the above-listed performers, You Hurt My Feelings also stars Owen Teague, Jeannie Berlin, Amber Tamblyn, David Cross, Zach Cherry, Sarah Steele, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, and Sunita Mani.

Director Nicole Holofcener has had an eclectic, prolific career as a writer-director, most recently co-writing the well-reviewed but sadly underseen The Last Duel. She was also Academy Award-nominated in 2019 for the adapted screenplay of Can You Ever Forgive Me? Check out the trailer for the upcoming You Hurt My Feelings below, which will be released by A24 on May 26, 2023.
