Watch the First Trailer for Ava DuVernay’s Netflix Incarceration Documentary 13TH

Ava DuVernay is incredibly busy these days. Just days after premiering a narrative short film in Washington, D.C., the first trailer for her documentary 13TH has dropped. The film takes a look at the phenomenon of mass incarceration in the U.S., and its history going all the way back to the 13th Amendment, which allowed for slavery only as punishment for a crime.

13TH will premiere at the New York Film Festival this Friday, Sept. 30. This will be the first time a nonfiction film will open the festival. The film will launch globally on Netflix on Oct. 7, and will have a limited theatrical run beginning then, as well.

As the trailer suggests, 13TH will be a hard look at the history of mass incarceration in American culture, and will investigate exactly what has led politicians on both sides of the aisle to feel as though they have to be tough on crime. DuVernay is an incredibly skilled and focused director, and 13TH looks to be a pointed look at one of the most under-reported problems impacting our everyday lives. Check out the full trailer above.
