Check Out Jude Law as Captain Hook in Disney’s Peter Pan & Wendy Trailer

Peter Pan & Wendy is a film that has been in Disney’s back pocket for a long, long time at this point. It was way back in 2016 that the multimedia behemoth first announced that director David Lowery–who previously helmed Pete’s Dragon the same year–would be tackling a live action adaptation of the classic Disney animated film Peter Pan, itself adapted from J. M. Barrie’s 1904 play Peter Pan; or, the Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up. The subsequent Lowery version of the film arguably gained more interest following the director’s fantastically singular The Green Knight in 2021, but its status has repeatedly swapped back and forth between being planned for theaters and a streaming debut on Disney+. The streaming route is where the company finally ended up, with a release date now set for April 28, 2023.

This version of the Peter Pan story seems to really focus on a couple key things: Peter’s insistence on not growing up or maturing, and making Wendy into an equal player as a starring protagonist, as the title would obviously imply. The synopsis is as follows:

Peter Pan & Wendy introduces Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson), a young girl looking to avoid boarding school who meets Peter Pan (Alexander Molony), a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters an evil pirate captain, Captain Hook, and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.

The biggest star power here, meanwhile, is that of Jude Law stepping into the ruffled shirt and festooned hat of Captain Hook, which you can see in action in the trailer below. Law’s casting certainly feels right in theory, although in practice (and in the footage below) we might argue it doesn’t feel quite … grandiose enough? In comparison with the scenery chewing Dustin Hoffman in 1991’s Hook, let’s just say that Law might have a difficult assignment on his hands. At the very least, though, we’re looking forward to seeing Jim Gaffigan as bumbling first mate Mr. Smee. That’s a fine bit of casting, if you ask us.
