Downsizing‘s Second Trailer Spoils a Key Plot Point

The latest trailer for Alexander Payne’s Downsizing provides an expansive look at the diminutive drama, revealing a key plot point in the process, so if you are looking forward to going into this film fresh, you’ll want to skip both the trailer above and its description below.

The trailer opens on Matt Damon’s protagonist Paul and his wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig), leading mundane and stressful lives as full-sized humans. Paul’s pal Dave (Jason Sudeikis) talks him into “downsizing,” a radical life change that will relieve Paul and Audrey’s financial stresses by turning them tiny. However, shortly after Paul chooses to irreversibly shrink himself, he discovers that Audrey ended up getting cold feet and opting not to go through with the procedure. As in Payne’s 2011 film The Descendants, the loss of a wife spurs a journey of self-discovery, as Paul spreads his wings to explore the wonders of his tiny new world and “do something that matters.”

Downsizing opens on Dec. 22. Watch the film’s new trailer above and revisit its previous trailer here, plus the very first teaser here.
