Miller plays Gene, an emoji who has a wide range of facial expressions, which is unusual for emojis living in Textopolis. In his desperation to be more normal, Gene sets out on an “app-venture” across the world to find the code necessary to fix him. Corden will voice Hi-5, Gene’s best friend, and Glazer will voice the code breaker Jailbreak.
“Hi-5 is a high-five emoji who is a highly motivated, and highly dramatic, hand on a mission (sorry), and the brilliantly versatile, ebullient, and always lovable James Corden fits this part like a glove (sorry again),” said director and repentant cliché user Anthony Leondis (Igor ) in a statement. “For the rebel ‘break all the codes’ computer programmer emoji Jailbreak, Ilana Glazer is the kind of singularly free-spirited, fearless and funny actress to make girls really feel the empowered ‘nobody’s gonna keep me in a cage’ attitude this character exudes.”
EmojiMovie is only the latest in a long line of animated works for Corden, who also lent his voice to the forthcoming animated film Trolls. EmojiMovie: Express Yourself hits theaters on Aug. 11, 2017.
