There was a time when you couldn’t reboot a film series, wait two years, and then reboot it again, but that time is certainly not 2019. Look no further than Jason Reitman’s just-announced return to the world of Ghostbusters for Sony. The director of Thank You For Smoking, Juno and Up in the Air would be stepping into the shoes of his father, Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 Ghostbusters. The junior Reitman has reportedly been working on the project for some time, under the code name “Rust City.”
The new Ghostbusters script is written by Reitman and Gil Kenan, director of the animated film Monster House, and would go into production this summer with a 2020 release looming in short order. Sony describes the film as “the next chapter in the original story,” implying that it will hold closer to the original Ghostbusters chronology than the 2016, all-female reboot.
