Eddie Redmayne Is a Hospital Serial Killer in First Trailer for Netflix’s The Good Nurse
Photos via NetflixIt’s always interesting to see an award-winning actor really stretch the types of characters they’re known for playing, and that feels like a pretty apt description of Eddie Redmayne taking on the role of a prolific serial killer in Netflix’s upcoming The Good Nurse. The upcoming thriller pairs Redmayne with fellow Academy Award winner Jessica Chastain as a pair of nurses, with one beginning to suspect that the other may have an extremely dark secret.
The Good Nurse is based on the 2013 book of the same name by author Charles Graeber, and is an adaptation of the true story of serial killer Charles Cullen, who worked in many medical facilities over the course of a 16-year medical nursing career. Incredibly, Cullen managed to avoid being directly implicated for patient deaths wherever he went, even though he repeatedly used similar modus operandi, administering fatal overdoses of drugs such as insulin to induce patient deaths. Cullen was arrested in 2003 and will spend the rest of his life in prison—by some estimates he may have been the most prolific serial killer in history, and the true number of his victims will likely never be known.
The Good Nurse is helmed by Danish director Tobias Lindholm, perhaps best known as the co-writer of Mads Mikkelsen’s 2020 film Another Round. It will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, before a limited theatrical release on Oct. 19 in the U.S., followed by a Netflix premiere on Oct. 26, 2022.
In the trailer below, we mostly see things from Chastain’s perspective, as fellow nurse Amy Loughren. The set-up looks good for a tense thriller, probing into the psyche of a man who silently left bodies in his wake for more than a decade. Check out the first footage below.
