Ava DuVernay Confirms Two Characters Appearing in Her New Gods Film
Photo by Kevin Winter/GettyAva DuVernay finally threw us a few bones for her forthcoming big-screen adaptation of DC Comics’ New Gods series.
In a series of Q&A responses on Twitter, the acclaimed director confirmed that series antagonist Darkseid and the Female Furies will appear in the film, the former of which isn’t much of a surprise: Darkseid is not only a central character to the Jack Kirby-created comic book mythology, but also one of the most powerful villains in the D..C. Universe to begin with.
How could any self-respecting Barda fan not include the The Furies?! I’m looking forward to them so much. #AskAvahttps://t.co/83zD6PeFBx

The self-professed superfan of the series’ heroine Big Barda also took to Twitter to write that she is “looking forward” to bringing the Furies to life, the band of warrior women of which Barda is a part.
On the topic of casting, however, DuVernay was tight-lipped, opting not to reveal any casting preferences, but the director—who is known for carrying over at least one actor from her preceding narrative project—hinted that there is a “99% chance” an actor from When They See Us will appear in the film.
Nope. Keeping my mind open. #AskAvahttps://t.co/IhuvqzuvQa

In each of my narrative projects since my first film entitled I WILL FOLLOW, I bring over an actor from the last project I made. So, yes, there is a 99.9% chance this will happen again. https://t.co/BGNvouyNDJ

The Jack Kirby-created comic book mythology revolves around a battle between good and evil in the midst of a conflict between two opposing alien planets. New Gods and its encompassing “Fourth World” universe is expansive and complex, so there’s no telling what other characters will appear alongside Darkseid and the warriors, but the series’ superhero heavyweights Orion, Big Barda and Mister Miracle (whose 2017 relaunch was penned by the forthcoming project’s co-writer Tom King) are likely contenders.
DuVernay is currently penning the New Gods script with King, which she confirms is still in progress.
In progress. #AskAvahttps://t.co/Un7GQ9WMAp

A release date, cast and shooting schedule for the film have yet to be announced, but stay tuned for any further updates on the project. For now, you can marvel at this recent image of DuVernay and King:
