Journalist and Filmmaker Nia Hampton to Host The Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival

The newly announced Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival will center femme-identified people of color, calling for short films, abstract videos or moving image pieces that center on black femmes. Selected films will be screened on May 5 during “Drapetomania: The Strong Urge to Escape,” writer and filmmaker Nia Hampton’s first solo gallery show. The exhibition will be held at the Waller Gallery in Baltimore, Md. from April 13 through May 26.

Hampton is a filmmaker and nomadic journalist who found her voice while traveling throughout South America and the Caribbean. She returned to Baltimore after documenting her time in Brazil and created the indie documentary Not About a Riot. Her work has appeared in L.A. Weekly and numerous other online outlets, including Paste, and she’s published collections of poetry and prose, as well.

The Waller Gallery, where the Black Femme Supremacy Film Festival will be held, is a multidisciplinary art gallery focusing on art created by people of color. The gallery’s website states the following goals: to “support POC artists locally and globally through exhibitions, programming, and collaborative projects; consider all forms of art including design, social practice, craft, and digital art; help to grow the arts community in Baltimore by engaging with artists at any stage of their practice.”
