The First Trailer For The Girl in the Spider’s Web Is a Pulse-Pounding Revenge Thriller

That film, starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara as multitalented hacktivist Lisbeth Salander, received widespread critical acclaim when it was released in 2011, but ultimately was a slight box office disappointment for distributors Columbia and MGM. The stage was set at the time for an entire series of Rooney-starring Salander movies, but instead, the series and its bestselling source material sort of faded into the background.
That is, until now. We just got our first trailer for the Fede Álvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) version of The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and suffice to say, it looks like one hell of a wild ride. Our interest in this movie just spiked way, way up. Check the trailer below.
Immediately, there are some very cool cast standouts here. Lead Claire Foy is just coming off a starring role in Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane, while Sylvia Hoeks, playing “estranged twin sister” Camilla Salander, was a scene-stealer as the psychotic replicant Luv in Blade Runner 2049, and looks equally pissed off here. In addition, the film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Cameron Britton and Stephen Merchant.
There’s also a whole lot of evidence of crazy action setpieces at work in this trailer, suggesting that The Girl in the Spider’s Web could potentially be less a brooding drama than the Fincher film, and perhaps a more straightforward action/spy/espionage thriller. We’ll just have to wait and see, but given Fede Álvarez pedigree so far, we’re expecting some intense, visceral action.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is scheduled for a Nov. 9, 2018 release in the U.S. You can also check out another look at Claire Foy’s version of Salander below.
