Watch the First Trailer for Horror Sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night

When it arrived in 2008, The Strangers was hailed by some horror fans as a modern classic, although praise for the film has never quite been universal. At the very least, it represented a well-executed take on the good ‘ole home invasion subgenre of horror, pitting a young woman played by Liv Tyler against a cadre of mask-wearing assailants who have attacked her for reasons unknown—you might say that the film presaged the likes of The Purge by a few years. Today, The Strangers is best remembered for two things:

1. Its excellent, lingering camerawork, especially in the scene where one of the assailants appears in the background of the frame and the heroine doesn’t see him, and

2. The ending, wherein it’s implied that the attackers never had “a reason,” beyond “because you were home.”

In the years since, director Bryan Bertino has worked on a few other horror projects, most recently directing A24’s release of The Monster, which we didn’t much care for. But now his most well-known creation is coming back with the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night. Bertino is not directing—that’s Johannes Roberts, who directed this year’s surprisingly successful shark movie 47 Meters Down—but he did write the screenplay.

The film stars Martin Henderson, Bailee Madison and Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks as its biggest star, although the latter doesn’t make much of an appearance in the above first trailer. It also seems to mark the return of the same band of psychopaths who were torturing Liv Tyler in the first go-round. Let’s hope these new characters’ luck is a little bit better than Liv’s was.

The Strangers: Prey at Night (wouldn’t Prey by Night be a better title?) is scheduled for a March 9, 2018 release.
