Watch David Lynch’s Thought Gang Visual Companion Piece, “Ant Head”

David Lynch has shared “Ant Head,” the nearly 15-minute-long, avant-garde visual accompaniment to he and longtime collaborator Angelo Badalamenti’s experimental music project Thought Gang’s self-titled debut album, out now through Sacred Bones. The video, shot by Lynch, features the songs “Frank 2000” and “Woodcutters From Fiery Ships” off of Thought Gang. It was originally premiered at Lynch’s Festival of Disruption in Los Angeles last month.

The video matches the jarring industrial grind of Thought Gang’s old-school experimentation with grainy black-and-white footage of a colony of ants crawling over a piece of cheese. The cheese is fashioned to look like a screaming head. Yeah, it’s kind of disturbing, but it’s not full-on grimdark. Twin Peaks was such a phenomenon for the way it balanced darkness and surrealism, and Lynch and Badalamenti find ways to inject levity into even their most monstrous collaborations. There’s a certain glee to the way they match sight and sound—how the track’s jittery, popping bass notes and skittish drums call to mind the footsteps of a thousand tiny insects. Doesn’t that sound fun?
