Swedish filmmaker David Sandberg’s viral martial arts comedy short film, Kung Fury, made waves last year when it was successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter to reach its production budget goals and ultimately made its way to the Directors’ Fortnight of Cannes Film Festival. After its debut at Cannes the film was uploaded to Youtube, where it subsequently reached more than 25 million views, 10 million of those in the first three days the video was up.
Now it seems that a highly-anticipated sequel to the ‘80s-inspired time travel action flick is already in the works—Sandberg uploaded a photo of a seemingly completed script titled “Kung Fury II The Movie” to Instagram with the caption “Today, Kung Fury turns 1… Today, the future is written… Stay tuned #happykungfuryday”:

With something of a cult fanbase, Kung Fury’s sequel should steamroll through the production and cost obstacles that hindered the first film’s release, and it’s unknown at press time whether Sandberg will again turn to crowdfunding to complete Kung Fury II. We posted last year about how a feature-length version; of the original Kung Fury was also in the process of being produced—Sandberg has yet to comment on whether that project and the sequel script he posted are related.
There’s not much we can predict about the forthcoming sequel, but fans are sure to expect the visual gags, celebrity cameos (David Hasselhoff and Jorma Taccone of SNL) and bizarre antics that rocketed the first film to popularity, and the eccentric Sandberg is sure to deliver.
