Jewel – Goodbye Alice in Wonderland

Pop singer/songwriter takes stock of her so-called life

Jewel’s sixth album ?nds her in wistful-heroic mode as she contemplates her life, success and California phonies who attempt to perfect themselves with “sushi and facials and carrot juice.” Although Goodbye winds down after the brilliant power pop of “Only One Too” (which beats anything on Liz Phair’s new album), Jewel never appears to be going through the motions—her grasp of pop form is as compelling as her voice, which shades from callow to knowing to heroic with her unique, troubled aplomb. “I’m embarrassed to say / The rest is rock ’n’ roll cliché,” she sings, and these clichés suit her.
