EXCLUSIVE: BAILEN Premiere Music Video For “Tired Hearts”

Fresh off of their latest album Tired Hearts, siblings Daniel, David and Julia Bailen—who perform as BAILEN—have unveiled the music video for the project’s title track. Tired Hearts, produced by Brad Cook and mixed by Lars Stalfors, has been in our rotation for the last week and for good reason: Across a dozen tracks, BAILEN have perfected an intricate and inviting multi-genre soundscape.

It’s no surprise that the trio ultimately opted to give a unique spotlight to the album’s title track; within it’s near-four-minute runtime, the arrangements migrate from a solemn pulse of piano to a chart-ready breakdown of percussive radiance. It’s emblematic of BAILEN’s greatest strength: an ability to craft a perfect concerto of emotional, flawless indie pop.

“‘Tired Hearts’ is one of the first songs that we wrote for this new record and it dictated a lot of where we took the rest of the songs thematically and musically. It began as an adaptation from a 19th century poem about an Irish factory worker and speaks about the search for understanding and belonging while our means of survival drives us further from that. To be quite honest, it’s a song about late-stage capitalism. We had worked on this song over the summer of 2020 and Daniel had made a rough demo in Logic that had some different sonic textures we hadn’t explored with yet. The version on the record ended up using most of the stems from Daniel’s Demo,” Julia says.
