A Vision of Björk’s “Utopia” in New Video

Björk’s new album Utopia is out now via One Little Indian. We’ve released premiere after premiere (of videos “Blissing Me,” and “The Gate,” namely) in the wake of it, trying to get at what she’s getting at with her whole other and inner world: cosmic self-love seems to figure prominently, as well as the highs and lows of falling in love. With a new video for the title track, Björk finally gives us what is most nearly the living room or gathering valley of this realm, fully-fledged, realized and picturesque. Directed by by Warren Du Preez and Nick Thornton Jones, it features Björk in her most primal costume yet.
As a recent piece in The New Yorker reports, “for ‘Utopia,’ she put together an all-women 12-piece flute orchestra—a gesture that was as much about atmospherics as politics. ” Björk has taken “Tinder album” feelings and turned them inside out into the spacious, visual soundscape of pre-recorded birdsong and the color pink.
