Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.
Who doesn’t love a good mystery? Blood Cultures want you to unwind their story, lulling you in with sleuthing bedroom-pop beats and charismatic vocals delivered by their masked singer. The last we heard from the anonymous outfit was 2017’s warbling Happy Birthday, and today (Aug. 7) we’re hearing a new taste of the beguiling band’s sophomore effort, Oh Uncertainty! A Universe Despairs.
“No Favors” is a low-key banger. Set to a hazy four-on-the-floor beat, the track moves forward at a sedated clip, captivating with breezy handclaps and enigmatic synths that glow with shades of neon. An errant guitar noodles in the distance of the mix, leading to a foot-tapping groove caught somewhere between the club and the curb.
Lyrics on the track lean into the band’s mystery, spinning a narrative of regret for an undisclosed event: “I don’t know how to act / All these things I would take them back,” our singer croons just before a gonzo instrumental break that further refines the group’s pop sensibilities.
