Hear Country Singer Caitlyn Smith Perform Songs From Her Debut EP On This Day in 2014

Country singer Caitlyn Smith released her debut album Starfire last year, and we named it one of the best country albums of 2018. As its title might suggest, Starfire burned quite bright, giving Smith a stunning entrance to the Americana/country world. But Smith, like so many artists these days, isn’t totally classifiable. As our critic Robert Ham wrote last year about one particular song, “‘Don’t Give Up On My Love’ swells with the dramatics of an Adele hit, and her ode to her old hometown of ‘St. Paul’ could slot right between Sam Smith and Khalid on a Top 40 playlist.” In other words, Smith has some major “star” power.

In November, Smith announced her sophomore album Supernova. It’s arriving March 13 on Monument Records, and you can listen to one of the powerful lead singles, “Damn You For Breaking My Heart,” which Smith wrote with her husband Rollie Gaalswyk, and Gordie Sampson, below.

“A supernova is a blast, the final and fullest expression of a star, and, to me, its most beautiful form,” Smith said in a press statement upon the album’s announcement. “I made it the album title because I wanted the album to represent a whole range of emotions. I wanted each song to have that weight, to sit in its most utmost emotion.”

Smith certainly has no problem conveying emotion. On this day (Dec. 12) in 2014, a still budding Smith brought the heat to the Daytrotter studios to play four of the seven songs on her debut EP Everything to You: the title track, “All My Lovers,” “Novocaine” and “Wasting All These Tears.” Even then, she sounded passionate and assured.
