Listen to “Redbone,” the Stellar Second Single from Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love!
The only Donald we acknowledge is Glover
Photos by Isaac Brekken/GettyLast week, it was “Me and Your Mama”—this week, it’s “Redbone.” Both songs find Childish Gambino, known to most as Donald Glover, pushing his musical boundaries ever further.
Glover’s new single, the second from his much-anticipated album Awaken, My Love!, debuted today on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show before making its way to the rapper’s social media pages. Check that—in light of his new tunes, referring to Glover as a rapper feels reductive. “Redbone” is a soulful, slinky throwback populated by Glover’s pitched-up and filtered crooning, punchy funk bass-playing and just a pinch of glockenspiel. The song eventually shifts into a sprawling instrumental break that rapturously rises and falls as it pushes past the five-minute mark. “Redbone” feels more like the work of an R&B virtuoso than just your average mic-rocker.
