Daily Dose: Jordan Klassen, “Dominika”

Daily Dose is your daily source for the song you absolutely, positively need to hear every day. Curated by the Paste Music Team.

I always find myself endeared to those musicians and artists that don’t take themselves all that seriously. Or at least have a healthy sense of humor about what they do for a living. That’s what immediately attracted me to the work of Canadian singer-songwriter Jordan Klassen. As you can tell from the wonderfully chintzy cover art for his new album Big Intruder, he is more than willing to look a little ludicrous, even when promoting his art. It would border on mockery if it didn’t also perfectly match the breezy pop vibe of the music. This record would sound great coming out of a faux wood hi-fi set up in your parents’ basement.

The video for his latest release from this LP, “Dominika,” embraces this throwback aesthetic even more as its produced with all the gauzy glory of a public access channel still shooting on VHS camcorders. Of this clip, Klassen says, “I wanted to make something that was playful like the song; silly in an honest way. We were inspired by a lot of late 80s/early 90s music videos where it felt like the artist just shot a bunch of footage of them hanging around and lip syncing.” Check out the video, and look over his upcoming run of tour dates that takes him through Europe and North America below the clip.
