Watch The Teskey Brothers at the Paste Sessions From MerleFest

Paste Studio “On The Road” rambles on, this time to Wilkesboro, N.C., for the 36th annual MerleFest! The festival was founded in 1988 in memory of Doc Watson’s son Merle, and features “traditional plus” music, described by Doc Watson himself as, “the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play.” The Teskeys fall further along the “plus” end of the MerleFest spectrum than “traditional,” sharing three of their soulful blues rock songs, including one fan favorite and two from the current album The Winding Way.

Full Session

The Teskey Brothers open with one of their most popular tunes, the non-album single “Forever You and Me.” The arrangement is bolstered in this session by tenor saxophonist Lilly Rose and trumpeter Audrey Powne.

“Forever You and Me”

The Teskeys and their crew couldn’t be an easier bunch to spend time with. Sure, we’re all working hard to make this session the best it can be, but we’re hanging out and enjoying it at the same time. Between the first and second songs, Josh and Sam echo the idea that it is important to take the time to savor life along the way. They expand on the topic, describing their method of “slow touring.” Slow touring involves consciously planning a tour to allow time on either end of the gig to experience and appreciate new places, as opposed to packing in as many dates as possible, seeing only the hotel, the bus, and the venue in the process. In the Teskeys’ case, it also involves bringing the kids and the whole family along for the ride, making sure that the “domestic” side of life is taken care of even in the midst of a demanding international tour.

“Oceans of Emotions”

Big thanks to the Teskey crew, MerleFest, and our friends at Window World for bringing these sessions to life, and please stay tuned for more Paste x MerleFest sessions to come!
