Wet Give Powerful Performance of “Weak” on Tonight Show

Brooklyn synth-pop trio Wet made their television debut last night on the Tonight Show where singer Kelly Zutrau gave a soulful performance of single “Weak.” The song, which will appear on the band’s debut album Don’t You, is a minimal production: there are some strummed chords on guitar and an extra drummer joins the lineup to add a bigger percussive sound, but it’s really Zutrau’s pleading vocals that steal the show and the band is smart to let them take center-stage.

Yesterday, Stereogum published Chris DeVille’s great article, “Will ‘Indie Pop’ Ever Become Pop, Period?” It’s an excellent question and one I often ruminate on. “With each subsequent hype cycle, ‘indie pop’ is sounding more and more like just plain pop,” DeVille writes, and he enumerates with examples like Chairlift, Grimes and, yes, Wet. Watch the performance here and wonder along why the general public can’t get on board.
