Surprise: Russia Apparently Doesn’t Love Donald Trump’s Insane Attack Ad

For those who can’t watch, the short ad features Vladimir Putin doing judo, an ISIS fighter pointing a gun at the screen, and Hillary Clinton barking like a dog—presumably to show she’s not up to the challenge of defending America from its arch-villains. Finally, there’s a shot of Vladimir Putin chuckling, as though he’s amused by the prospect of facing off against her.
It’s typically low-brow fare from Trump, designed to undermine his opponent in the most vicious way possible, and it’s probably effective among the kind of people who already support him. You can imagine how the rest of #NeverTrump America feels, but can you imagine how Russia feels?
Well, now you don’t have to imagine, because we have a response: They don’t like it. At all. From The Hollywood Reporter:
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday he’s seen the video, but doesn’t know if Putin has.
He said “we regard it negatively” and complained that “the demonization of Russia and everything connected to Russia is, unfortunately, an obligatory part of an American election campaign.”
Apparently they didn’t enjoy being conflated with ISIS, which shouldn’t come as a big surprise. Unfortunately, there was no specific reaction to Hillary Clinton barking like a dog. Until we hear from Putin on that issue, I consider this story incomplete.
One final note: The next time I feel really upset or angry with something, I’m definitely stealing the Russian reply: “I regard this negatively.”
