Former FBI Director James Comey Just Revealed Himself On Twitter

Last week, I wrote an article about James Comey’s alleged Twitter account tweeting again. Ashley Feinberg wrote a fascinating piece back in March that identified an account she believed to be Comey’s thanks to a litany of Comey family connections to the account. Four hours after her article went up, the account in question posted its first tweet.

But what made this whole ordeal truly weird is Comey’s friend, Benjamin Wittes. Last week, Wittes sent a series of cryptic tweets concerning @FormerBu, with one identifying the elephant in the room.

Well, the elephant in the room has identified himself. Here is the account’s latest tweet.

Wittes stopped playing his obvious cat and mouse game, and confirmed that this is indeed James Comey’s Twitter account.

So the question remains, what kind of writing is James Comey going to do? (UPDATE: I’m dumb, a book.) What does he mean by “tweeting in useful ways?” It’s a bit jarring to see Comey come out of the woodwork like this, and the only spark that I can think of is that he was interviewed by the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election. Robert Mueller could have what he needs from Comey, and the former FBI Director may be free to be a bit more candid in the public sphere.

The conspiratorial angle to this theory is that during Comey’s meeting with Mueller (and it would be crazy to think that Bob Mueller didn’t/won’t interview James Comey, considering that he is investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, and firing Comey is a central part of that ordeal), Comey learned something important about the investigation, and that is to blame for his cryptic messages. Let’s just go through Comey’s tweets since he resurfaced last Wednesday, beginning with his second tweet ever.

There is so much confusion swirling around this Trump-Russia saga, and Comey’s cageyness isn’t helping things. Make sure you maintain a healthy level of skepticism, but keep an eye on @FormerBu. I doubt that this will be the last newsworthy item to come from this account.
