Watch: Michael Moore Filmed the MAGA Bomber at a Trump Rally Nearly Two Years Ago
Screencap via YouTubeIn an Instagram post on Sunday, filmmaker Michael Moore released footage of the suspected mail bomber, Cesar Sayoc, attending a Trump rally, just one month after Trump’s inauguration. Moore and his crew were shooting for their film Fahrenheit 11/9, the goal of which was to shed light on the people who supported Trump. That’s why he told his crew he only wanted footage of the people in the crowd, not the president himself.
Moore writes in his Instagram post: “Who we needed to understand were our fellow Americans, lost souls full of anger and possible violence, easily fed a pile of lies so large and toxic that we wondered if there would ever be a chance that we could bring them back from the Dark Side.”
Fahrenheit 11/9 is still in theaters, though the footage of Sayoc never made it into the film. Watch Sayoc in the clip below, beginning around the 45-second mark.
This glimpse into Sayoc’s life lines up entirely with what we know about him now. In the footage, he’s shown brandishing a sign alluding to CNN and Hillary Clinton working together against Trump. If not for the sign, he might go unnoticed in the sea of other middle-aged men. The attendees chant, “shame,” “tell the truth” and, of course, “CNN sucks.”
Describing the scene, Moore recalls Trump telling his supporters that they should fear those who believe in climate change and providing women the right to their bodies. Whether it was Sayoc or not, someone certainly believes that—so much that they felt the need to attack.
