This Poll of Trump Supporters is Far Scarier Than Anything Involving North Korea

One of the most common defenses of why Americans should be allowed to fill their bathtubs with assault rifles is because the right to bear arms is objectively Constitutional. There is obviously debate around whether the original intent would apply to modern weaponry or not, but the fact remains, gun rights activists are often correct to point to the second amendment of the Constitution as a defense of their position. At least that’s grounded in something.
But that particular defense becomes a lot shakier when over half of Republicans decide that Article II, Section I of the United States Constitution doesn’t need to be followed, according to a recent poll from WaPo.
Specifically, 52 percent of polled Republicans claimed that if Trump were to postpone the 2020 election, they’d be on board. It’s almost as if claiming the Constitution as infallible only works when it aligns with your previously established worldview.
Here’s the important line Republicans are dangerously comfortable with bypassing:
The executive Power shall be vested in a President of the United States of America. He shall hold his Office during the Term of four Years, and, together with the Vice President, chosen for the same Term, be elected…
Note that nowhere in the Constitution is there an allowance made for those presidents that feel there was an instance of voter fraud, especially if there is no such proof. This situation is worth paying attention to as Trump’s so-called “Election Integrity Commission,” strives to find ways to suppress voters next election cycle.
Even if there was voter fraud—which there wasn’t—Trump and Republicans realize he won, right?
Here are some other, nearly-as-scary findings from this same poll:
—47 percent of Republicans think Trump won the popular vote.
—68 percent believe that “millions” of illegal immigrants voted in the 2016 election.
—73 percent think voter fraud happens “very often”
The poll was conducted in June, and 650 Republicans were polled.
