Making a Murderer's Brendan Dassey Ordered to Be Released from Prison

Making a Murderer landed on Netflix almost a year ago. When it dropped, it probably led to many heated discussions with your family over whether the central figures of the miniseries committed the crimes of which they were accused. While the guilt of Steven Avery is still up in the air, most agree that Brendan Dassey, Avery’s nephew, was wrongly convicted in connection with the murder at the heart of the series. After a judge overturned his conviction in August, Dassey was held on an appeal. Now, a judge has ruled that the now-26-year-old Dassey must be released.

Dassey has spent nearly a decade in prison following his 2007 conviction for the murder of Teresa Halbach. Though Dassey confessed on tape, the judge overturned his conviction and cited Dassey’s youth, intellect and the absence of a supportive adult as reasons why Dassey’s confession could be called into question.

Now, a Milwaukee local news report has revealed that Dassey will walk free following a court order that reads, “It is therefore ordered that Dassey’s motion for release … is granted.” However, reports indicate that Attorney General Brad Schimel intends to file an emergency motion seeking a stay of this release order.
