The First Teaser for David Fincher’s Netflix Series Mindhunter Looks Extremely Fincher-esque

David Fincher built a large part of his career on seedy crime cinema (Se7en, Zodiac, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl), so it makes sense that his newest collaboration with Netflix tracks an FBI agent out to apprehend serial killers and rapists. What we didn’t know until today was how Fincherian the new show would look.

The new teaser for Mindhunter has dropped, and the footage, which is eerily represented in snippets interspersed between shots of what looks like a Rorschach blot made of blood, has “Fincher” written all over it. From the muted, shadowy lighting to the crisp compositions to the airless interior spaces that range from courtrooms to prisons, the trailer feels like an amalgamation of shots taken from so many of the director’s other films, lending an air of chilly menace to the little that we know about the series’ plot. Technically, Fincher is only directing three of the episodes and executive-producing four, but it’s hard to imagine later helmers doing away with the Fincherian aesthetic, since it seems to fit the show’s genre territory so well.

Along with Fincher, Charlize Theron and Jennifer Erwin are also executive producers of Mindhunter, which is based on John Douglas’ memoir of the same name. The show will star Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany and Anna Torv, and is slated to premiere in October. Watch the teaser above.
