Outlander Season 7 Premiere: The Future Looks Bright

Nobody ever gets to stay together on Outlander. If they did, would it even stay a show?

With all of that drama, one would guess that the Frasers and Friends have truly high cortisol levels. I wonder if Claire has anything in her clinic for that problem…

Outlander Season 7 starts right where things left off in Season 6, which was the middle of a book. Since Starz has already said that this 16 episode season will be split into two, one would guess we will have another mid-story cliffhanger when the first half of Season 7 ends after eight episodes.

But for now, we can enjoy the journey—and it is action-packed, with Claire (Caitríona Balfe) in prison at the start of the war. Of course she didn’t murder Malva (Jessica Reynolds), but nobody believes it. After all, they have never actually seen a cesarean section before. And of course, Malva also claimed Jaime (Sam Heughan) was the father, which gives Claire a potential motive.

Claire’s attempt to help despite this drama has landed her locked up, and while Jamie and Ian (John Bell) look for her, Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones) emerges as an unexpected hero.

[Note: Spoilers below for the first episode of Outlander Season 7]

In the season opener, Tom becomes a messenger between Jamie and Claire, ultimately saving her life by sacrificing his own. This was a true surprise for me, I thought he was such a villain in the last season, with his creepy son and treatment of Malva. Never, in watching last season would I have expected a sacrifice of any kind from this man, but there it was; I suppose love does conquer all.

So many people on this show just love someone who is completely unavailable. Brianna (Sophie Skelton) and Roger (Richard Rankin) have been happily together for so long now, it worries me. I hope their love never changes.

Elsewhere in “A Life Well Lost,” Jamie is also once again asked about his loyalties. Of course, he knows what is going to happen during the American Revolution, but it doesn’t make things any less tricky when dealing with the factions here and now.

This first episode wrapped up the cliffhanger, and once again thankfully Claire and Jamie are together, but with this show who knows how long that will last?

I will not spoil the rest of the season, which I have previewed, but I will tell you that it has all the elements of great Outlander storytelling. Plenty of intrigue, steamy scenes—and of course plenty of drama. Based on this opening episode and what else is to come, Season 7 is definitely going to be worth the watch.
