Following the examples of Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, YouTube is producing its first scripted “television” series, announced via StockHouse. It will be based on the film series Step Up. YouTube’s series will focus on a group of young dancers in performing arts school. The series will be executive-produced by Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum, stars of the original Step Up.
“We know that dance is a hugely successful global category on YouTube, so I’m excited to have a series rooted in such an enormously popular genre on our platform,” Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s Head of Original Content, said. Step Up will be available exclusively to YouTube Red subscribers. YouTube Red, for $9.99 a month, ethically gets rid of ads and provides access to exclusive series, though Step Up will be the platform’s first narrative/dramatic outing. The show will premiere in 2017.
