New 3D Printer Resin Is Strong Enough to Make Chains, Cogs

3D-printed objects usually suffer from issues of weight and heft, as the current materials just aren’t that durable or resilient. This new resin from FormLabs, called Tough Resin, gives a little more “oomph” to your 3D printing, allowing for some amazing things, like the Rube Goldberg machine in the video below. Take a look:

Potential objects range from chains that can suspend concrete blocks, machinery such as cogs and snap-closing latches. Tough Resin does only come in one color, though, which is a bit of a bummer.

For enthusiasts, this is likely a welcome addition to your arsenal of materials. For a one-off hobbyist or newcomer, you might want to shy away. A single liter of FormLabs’ Tough Resin will set you back $150. Not bad if you do this all the time, but not great if you’re just looking to 3D print some giant gears and cogs for giggles.
