I wrote this song in honor of my colleague and all-time favorite teacher, Rich Weitzel, on the occasion of his retirement after 37 years of teaching English (and some other things) at L.A.Baptist/Heritage Christian School. One of the unique things that Mr. Weitzel used to do for years was to have literature discussions at lunch with his students underneath the shade of a tree on campus (hence my song's prominent metaphor). There's no one quite like Mr. Weitzel! What a privilege to know this man as a teacher, colleague and friend. He will be greatly missed on our faculty!
Many thanks to my talented friend Steven Bolar for recording and mixing my voice and guitar and adding a nice touch of organ as well on the track. Special thanks to the wonderful Sally Reiser for creating the simple yet poignant album art. Sally will also be retiring from teaching this year after nearly 2 decades of heartfelt work.
