Deadpool 2 Director Says an Extended Edition Is on its Way

Deadpool 2’s sizzling box office opening weekend, to the tune of $125 million, is already setting records—it’s the second highest opening weekend ever for an R-rated movie, which you’d imagine the producers are pretty happy with—the only film it trails is the original Deadpool, in fact. Fans seem pretty pleased as well, for the most part—as long as they’re not pissed off about the fate of X-Force, that is. But today, news comes from director David Leitch that we haven’t seen all of Deadpool 2 just yet. According to the director, there’s a substantial extended edition of the film on the way.

“There’s an extended cut,” Leitch said to Cinema Blend. “And I think that they may want to spin that out as a special thing, but right now I’m sort of… we’re taking our time, and it’s going back to the ‘director cut,’ and then sort of collaborating with Ryan, Rhett, and Paul, and making sure we’re all getting all the jokes we want — to have it be fun and our sort of fun collaboration.”

Leitch is of course referring to Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds, who portrays the Merc with a Mouth, along with screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who also wrote the first film. It would seem that the extended edition would thus function as the “true” director’s cut of the film, with input from all of the main creative players involved. Perhaps that means we’ll see some more of X-Force, including the unused material that was inserted into the trailers as a fake-out?

According to Leitch, the additional scenes include a montage of attempted suicide, ‘ala Groundhog Day, as Deadpool reacts to the fate of his girlfriend Vanessa. We’ll also be seeing more of Deadpool in the X-Men mansion as he attempts to be a productive “trainee,” and a few additional character scenes with folks such as Domino. That last one is worth getting excited over—we think that any additional Domino in Deadpool 2 is a very good thing.

It’s not yet known if the upcoming extended edition of the film will be included in the initial Blu-ray or DVD release, but it seems like a pretty safe (and cynical) assumption to expect Fox to release the theatrical version first and then try to make fans buy the film again in the extended edition. Because you know, they do like to extort your cash out of you and all.
