The Wolves Are Circling in First Teaser for Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon

After only teasing us with a choice few film stills over the last several months (or maybe years?), Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon dropped its first trailer ahead of its Cannes premiere. The wolves are out. Can you see them?

Killers of the Flower Moon sees Scorsese adapt David Grann’s true-crime book Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, published in 2017. The book focuses on the Osage Nation murders, also known as the Reign of Terror, which occurred in the early 1900s.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro are the familiar faces from the Scorsese stable, but Lily Gladstone looks to be the big breakout from the movie, after being a phenomenal presence in indies for years. And let’s not forget Jesse Plemons and Brendan Fraser either, both of whom will probably wear big hats in the film. The first trailer sees Scorsese set up the sheer vitriolic racism that’s never gone away towards Indigenous people, just laid dormant. It’s a hungry teaser, full of exploitation and greed and hate.

Take a look:

Along with some stunning slow-motion photography highlighting the Osage before DiCaprio’s Southern accent reads to us about them, Scorsese is showcasing tight courtrooms and sprawling confrontations. It’s a Western at its most cynical and knowing, with suited white men swarming like parasites and violence springing up all around them. You won’t want to see suspenders after this. The motif used in the teaser, where these invading colonizers are wolves, only takes on a more visceral tone when placed in context with Scorsese’s recent work–the wolves never left, they just became The Wolf of Wall Street.

Killers of the Flower Moon hits theaters on October 6 and will eventually come to Apple TV+.
