The Shrek Retold Trailer is Like a Dreamworks Acid Trip

Hey everyone, remember Shrek? Big green ogre? Voiced my Mike Myers, before he dropped out of the public view? Lots of sequels? Smashmouth dance party endings? Yeah, that Shrek.

Well, before an official sequel/reboot can arrive from Dreamworks, a group of internet animators decided to strike while the iron was lukewarm by creating Shrek Retold. This crowdsourced, feature-length retelling of the original Shrek was created by more than 200 animators each taking a piece of the pie, and yeah … the trailer released today certainly looks that way. There’s a free-flowing, stream-of-consciousness madness here that could make Shrek Retold either a deliriously fun watch, or something that becomes completely insufferable after about 10 minutes. We leave it to you to decide.

In terms of inspirations, the constantly changing animation styles actually remind us of the season opener of Bob’s Burgers season 8, “Brunchsquatch,” which was done in much the same way, with the visuals changing every 30 seconds or so. In the case of Shrek Retold, however, it feels much more like the goal is a certain sense of disorienting chaos, rather than a straight retelling of the Shrek story. Get ready for some additional subtext, would be our warning.

There’s no official release date announced for Shrek Retold, nor is it clear exactly in what kind of manner the film will be released. Look for future announcements to hit sometime in the near future. In the meantime, check out the full trailer below, if you have the constitution for it.
