Conan Announces “Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico”

Tensions are high in North America, and many people feel more divided than ever. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto recently canceled a scheduled meeting with Donald Trump over disagreements about the border wall—Nieto has said repeatedly that Mexico will not pay for the wall, Trump’s team insists they will pay “one way or another.” Trump is now floating the idea of introducing a 20 percent Mexico tariff, and in case you forgot from your Intro to Econ gen-ed class, tariffs typically hurt consumers more than anyone—for a specific example, please refer to the disastrous 2002 steel tariff. But this post isn’t about our impending economic degradation. It’s about the comedy to help you through it!

Conan O’Brien has decided to try and put a balm on the tense situation between the U.S. and Mexico by announcing his one-time show “Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico.” O’Brien plans to rent out a studio in Mexico City, hire an all-Mexican staff and host a show specifically for a Mexican audience. The announcement is followed by a somewhat uncomfortable joke about outsourcing, but O’Brien quickly moves past it by saying, “I’m really looking forward to who we’re gonna meet, how it’s all gonna work, it’s kinda fascinating,” and then, “if it really gels, maybe that’s where I’m meant to be.” Perhaps O’Brien, like many of us, is considering a move out of the U.S. “Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico” is set to air at 10 p.m. EST on Wednesday, March 1. O’Brien does not speak Spanish, and if he truly wants to cater to a Mexican audience, he should probably start practicing today.
