Johnny’s Acting up Again in HBO’s New Trailer for Last Week Tonight Season 7
John Oliver returns to the Last Week Tonight desk on Feb. 16
Images via HBOIn the years since it premiered in 2014, HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has come to fill the role of Jon Stewart’s Daily Show: a satirical news show as silly as it is indispensable, without which it’s easy to feel lost, awash in the head-spinning absurdity of modern politics. Fortunately for us all, Oliver is set to get back on the airwaves in mid-February for Last Week Tonight’s seventh season, a new trailer for which HBO debuted Wednesday. Considering we’re now in a presidential election year and things are showing no sign whatsoever of becoming any less batshit, Oliver’s return (after Season 6 wound down in November) could not come at a better time.
If you’re already watching Oliver—and you should be—then you don’t need us to tell you a thing about this trailer, or to even see it. But if you happen to be new to Last Week Tonight, the clip is a wonderfully comprehensive introduction to its weekly antics, from Oliver’s elaborate, HBO budget-draining prop gags and remote segments to his biting political commentary and brutally self-deprecating wisecracks. The deep-diving host climbs Everest, leads a musical number, lethally brains Jigglypuff with a Pokeball, levels Tucker Carlson and welcomes some special guests, including a globe-burning Bill Nye. In Oliver’s words, “Are you not entertained?!”
Last Week Tonight returns Sunday, Feb. 16, at 11 p.m. on HBO. Watch the trailer below.
